Tuition Fees in Germany

International students in Germany are generally required to pay a tuition fee of around EUR 1500 per semester for Bachelor’s/Staats examen and following Master’s degree programs at all higher education institutions.

Exceptions and details regarding tuition fees

  • Some students who began their degree program in or after the winter semester of 2017/18 are subject to this fee. The grandfather clause applies if you change components of your degree program.
  • Students who enrolled at Heidelberg University in the summer semester of 2017 and continue in the same degree program in the winter semester of 2017/18 are exempt from this fee.
  • Certain exceptions to the tuition fee law are outlined under § 5 of the Higher Education Fees Act. Exemptions can be obtained by submitting relevant documents to the International Relations Office.
  • Higher education institutions may exempt up to 5% of international student fees.
